What is Mental Performance

Sometimes our toughest competition isn’t the opponent standing across from us—it’s what’s happening between our ears.

In mental performance training, we work together to develop practical tools and techniques that help you train your brain to work for you, not against you, when it matters most.

Athletes spend countless hours in the weight room, on the field, and on the court building their skills, strengthening their bodies, and growing their game. So why not spend that same intentional time training your brain?

Mental performance training helps athletes strengthen the mental skills that support confidence, focus, resilience, composure, motivation, and more—so you can perform with purpose and get the most out of your abilities.

Mental performance training focuses on developing skills such as confidence, mindset, emotional regulation, focus, resilience, and motivation.

We build these skills through practical, evidence-based techniques and interventions such as goal setting, self-talk, thought-stopping, breathing techniques, imagery, routines, and more. The goal is to give athletes tools they can apply in practice, competition, and everyday life to help them perform at their best.

Mental performance training is not the same as counseling or mental health treatment. While the two fields may sometimes use similar techniques, they serve different purposes and address different needs. Mental performance focuses primarily on developing the psychological skills that support performance and personal growth, while mental health professionals address mental and emotional health concerns.

Both are important parts of an athlete’s overall experience, and knowing which type of support you need is an important part of taking care of yourself and your performance.

What does that look like at Smart Mental Performance

Our mission is to help individuals and teams strengthen their mental skills, cultivate positive mindsets, and embrace continuous growth. Through collaboration, connection, and intentional mental performance strategies, we create supportive environments where people feel empowered to build confidence, navigate challenges, learn from setbacks, and bring their best selves to what they do.

We believe growth is about more than the end result. It’s about trusting the process, staying connected, embracing challenges, and finding enjoyment along the way.

Because when you strengthen your mind, connect with others, and embrace growth, you give yourself the opportunity to perform at your fullest potential—and have some fun doing it.
